the outsiders by S.E. Hinton

this book is about a 14-year-old boy named Ponyboy Curtis. He and his gang are “greasers” growing up around the 60s. They have to deal with grudges between them and the “Socs” . The socs seem to have more than they could ever want but they still find the need to start wars with the greasers. One night Ponyboy and his friend Johnny are in a park and they get humped by a group of socs. the socs attack them and in an act of self-defence Johnny kills one of the socs. Scared both him and Ponyboy run away to the country and spend about a week living in an empty church. Johnny decides that he would rather be just in prison then stay in hiding for the rest of his life. When Ponyboy and Johnny go for a walk one day a group of kids on a school trip get caught in the church when it caches on fire. Johnny and Ponyboy risk their lifes and get the trapped kids out. On the way to the hospital every one tells Ponyboy that he and Johnny are heroes. Ponyboy is fine but Johnny broke his back in the fire and doctors say if he recovers he won’t ever walk again. Johnny dies and it destorys Ponyboy to lose his friend. The night Johnny died Ponyboy and a gang of greasers battle it out with a group of socs. The greasers are clearbrating their victory over the socs when Ponyboy watches his friend die in the hospital. Later that night another one of his friends holds up a grocery store and is shot down by the police. The boy did all this on purpose because after Johnny had died he felt that he had nothing left. Ponyboy and the rest of his friends eventually get over their friends deaths but never forget them.

I really liked the book it was really depressing how most of the kids didn’t have family that wanted them. i think that why the messed up their lifes and joined ganges. I think Johnny was right when he told Ponyboy to “stay golden”

This book was about a 16-year old kid named Bobby. He gets his girlfriend Nia pregnant and they have a baby girl he names Feather. Nia gets really sick after the baby is born so Bobby has to take care of Feather all by himself because his mom wont help.

I really like how Angela Johnson wrote this book, ut made me feel really bad for Bobby because he was missing Nia a lot. I stayed up two nights in a row to finnish this book. On that show 16 and pregnant from Mtv it never shows a teen dad on his own. Angela Johnson is a very good writer.

The Bean Trees by Barara Kingsolver

At first this book is told in 2 parts of view Taylor Greer and Lou Ann. Taylor comes to “adopt” a 3-year-old named Turtle from a Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. She was abused and give to Taylor by a person who claimed to be her dead mothers sister. Taylor was to surprised to react at first and then it was too late she just took Turtle along with her to Tucson Arizona where they both meet with Lou Ann. Lou Ann has just been left by her husband ( a retired rodeo star) and is raising her new-born son Dwayne Ray. The 2 women become room mates and deal with turtles past broken mariges and illegal immigrants. Together they get past all their hardships and Turtle becomes Taylors legal daughter with the help of some friends.

I liked this book because it made things that some people have to deal with and their hardships kinda clear to me. Even tho this book is older than I am i liked the way Barbara Kigsolver wrote. I loved Turtles character and how Taylor saw things. I think I would want to live in a place like Arizona when I grow up.

This is a memoir of Jeannett’s life growing up. Her life was really tough she was badly burned at the age of 3 cooking hotdogs to feed her self. She and her family moving from one temporary place to another. Having an alcoholic father and a mom who was obsessed with writing and painting who wouldn’t cook or brush their hair. All the kids learned to be tough, not to cry when they fell, or complain if they hadn’t eaten all day. Her life wasnt all bad mixed in with the crazy stuff where some amazing things. How many people can say that when they where kids the had a tiger lick their hand? Just before she and her younger brother Brian where teens their family moved to her father’s home town of Walsh, West Virgina. They had to deal with freezing weather and no running water or electricy in a place no better than a slum. Her older sister Lorie an artist planned with Jeannett to escape to NYC as soon as she graduated. They saved up money for months only to have their father steel and drink all the escape money away. Lorie did get to leave on time and then so did jeannett. They got stable in the city with an apartment and jobs before sending for Brian, and then Maureen. Their parents soon moved up to but became homeless and living on the street. Jeannette and her siblings soon (except Maureen who runs away to California the place she was born after becoming a druggie and getting in trouble for stabbing her mom) lead normal lifes, get married establish carriers buy homes. Jeannette fianly overcomes all the troubles she had grown up with.

I love those book my older sister Sarah gave it to me and i have read it so many times it has become like a bible to me. I have gotten my sister to read it so she would know what im talking about all the time. My life hasnt been that normal but camperd to hers it was easy growing up not traveling in the back of a moving van holding my baby sister and having the doors burst open on the road. She really had to be brave growing up with a life like that. I think her book was amazing. I also read her book Half Brook Horses it’s the story about her grandmothers life. I think if you havent read this book yet you should.

By Scott Westerfeld

This book is about people who can become “parasite positive” by sharing a toothbrush, kissing, being bitten, or having sex with an infected person. They start having cravings for rare steaks, hating their old life, avoiding the sun, and eating people if their not carriers. Cal a carrier working for an agency trying to capture crazed “peeps” (vampireish people aka parasite positive) and getting them off the street before they kill everyone in sight. HE meets a girl named Lace short for Lacey living in the old apartment of the girl Morgan who infected Cal. Together they try to figure out whats living under all the buildings and rock of NYC.

I read this book because I really liked some of the other books this person has written. I liked that it wasnt like other vampire books that people are reading. I didnt really think of the “peeps” as vampires thou they just made me think of monsters and not other vampires ive read about. this book is way better than anything like twilight.
In this book Spud (Johnny) starts school at an all-boys boarding school in 1991 South Africa. He deals with his crazy roommates (the crazy 8), upperclassmen. Avoiding getting in trouble and dealing with the lead in the schools play Oliver. He also has to deal with the death of his friend Gecko. falling in love with a mermaid. He records all thees thing in his journal and it makes a great book.

I loved the people in the crazy 8. Spud made things like a crazy grandmother (wombat) seem fun. He has a lot of sad things happen to him but he makes it though it with the help if his teachers.the crazy 8 got into a lot of trouble with their midnight swims and getting one of their own stuck in the chapel window. This book and its sequel spud -the madness continues where both amazing books.

In this book Katiness and Peeta are sent back into the hunger games for challenging president Snow and starting a rebillion.Katiness and Peeta not only have to deal with being in the hunger games again but they have to go agenst the victors from past games. They make new friends and fight agenst being in the games they outsmart the game makers and excape at least most of them do.

This book kinda reminded me of the Uglys Prettys Specials Extras books. I was really sad at the end when Peeta was caught. I really can’t wait until the new book Mockingjay comes out 8/24/10. I liked the way katiness and her friends where able to escape from the Hunger Games.

By Suzanne Collins

Katniss Everdeen takes her younger sisters place in the hunger games (games created by the Panem where 1 boy and 1 girl 13-18 from each of the 12 districts compete in a survival game to kill all the other districts) and ends up not only fighting for her own life but her teammate Peeta’s to. together they change the way the rulers of Panem control the people. they forever change the hunger games and show the game makers that the aren’t just a pice of their game

I really liked the hunger games because u liked hoe Katniss always had a plan to help her and Peeta survive. It made me glade that there aren’t really t.v shows that force children to fight to the death. This book really made me think.

Unwinding: when every part of a person’s body is harvested and given to another person who needs those parts.

Conner is getting unwound because his parents don’t want him anymore and Risa is getting unwound because there’s no room for her at the state home. Neither of them want to be unwound and in a chain of events they meet up with a kid named Lev who is proud to be unwound as part of his religion. They meet up with other runaway unwinds and try to escape being sent to the harvest camps. Then Conner and Risa get separated from Lev but in the end they all end up in the same harvest camp but all survive. This book is about appreciating life and trying to survive until they turn 18.

I really loved this book and read it twice because it was so awesome. This book really made me think about when a person starts to live. It made me glad that my parents couldn’t send me to be unwound if I did something bad.
